Cannabis, both medical and otherwise, seized the news many times in the last week. State legislatures continue to fight as to whether their states should permit the legal distribution of medical herb thru the use of authorised medicinal pot clinics. While Vermont will consider its position this week in a state where medical marijuana has been legal since 2004, the Delaware senate overpoweringly authorized the legalization of medical marijuana for their state, although the law frankly "has flaws." Vermont Senate Bill Seventeen will now go to the House and if authorised will permit prescriptions for sufferers of harsh conditions like cancer or HIV to obtain medicinal pot from state-lisenced dispensaries. The bill passed by a margin of 18-3.

Washington's state capital saw a proposed statewide bill legalizing medicinal weed, House Bill 1550, dead on arrival as it was unable to pass commitee, by its cut-off point. The measure, energetically supported by the city of Seattle would have allowed legalization and a 15% taxation on medical weed products regulated by the state Liquor Control Board.

Meanwhile, an emotional debate erupted in Montana's Senate resulting in a 29-21 vote to repeal their medicinal weed law, which at last count received approval by 62% of citizens in that state. Initially missing its key deadline, suspension of Senate Bill 423 will need a two thirds House majority for suspension.

In Idaho, another northern state, public review hearings were held the last week of March to figure out the feasibility of House Bill 19, which would permit Idaho's chronically and seriously unwell to use medicinal marijuana to treat particualr conditions upon the advice of a doctor. The hearings were the 1st ever granted in the state for marijuana legislation.

The state of Michigan that has already legalized medicinal herb, reports that investigations to the Michigan State University's extension service regarding medicinal marijuana cultivation have slightly increased since legalization was implemented.

In Illinois, industrial hemp was on the program for the production of green products like ethanol, clothing, cosmetics and paper. Though the suggested hemp production would be of low-THC variations, Illinois was having none of it. Ironically, hemp products and fiber may be traded in Illinois, but only if these products are imported. Reportedly supported by the Illinois Farm Bureau, House Bill 1383 appears to support dying farm cash where hemp-based products are imported to the tune of nearly $30 bln a year.

Across the US, Apr One marked a medicinal cannabis landmark on the East Coast where the first medical marijuana dispensary opened in that area in Frenchville, Maine. Appearing as any other neighborhood home, Safe Alternatives is necessary by the state to keep floodlights and camcorders running Twenty four hours every day. Maine could set case law for other medical herb clubs to open in eastern states.
